“We’ve answered about 200 total calls in the past year, so I hope the posts help,” Fire Lt. Thomas Gaspari Jr. told Daily Voice, referring to a bulletin posted in front of Firehouse No. 1.
Borough firefighters have become accustomed to responding to cooking incidents or fires that could have been quickly extinguished with the help of working alarms.
They also post updates on their social media sites and on the outdoor bulletin board to encourage people to heed safety advice and avoid emergencies.
Before long, winter conditions will be a major consideration.
“We’re out there shoveling the fire hydrants, and we encourage residents to keep them clear,” said Gaspari, who also works for the borough DPW. “After we plow, we hope the roads stay clear, too.
"If the snow is thrown back into the roads, it melts and refreezes.”
For now, though, cleaning up fallen leaves, keeping roadways clear and minimizing fire risks are his concerns.
“That’s all we do now (with the DPW),” he said.
